I was surprised to find just how strong these four women were; I was expecting very submissive women with mainly stories about the exploits of their husbands. Instead I find that these four not only took over for their husbands, but a couple of them became matriarchs for their families.
The prose was well-written; it read fairly quickly and didn't get caught up in tiny details, as so many history books tend to. I have a newly kindled interest in the lives of these fascinating women, and intend to try to read more about them. I'll also keep an eye out for more work by this author, as I like her writing style.
