American Gods - Neil Gaiman I was expecting something less dark and gritty, but I found that regardless, I loved the book. Shadow's character is interesting, and the interactions with various people and places in the United States was really cool. I liked that they provided background by including immigrant stories to explain the premise. I will say that I knew that Mr. Wednesday was Odin as soon as he mentioned that his last name was Wednesday and that Lakeside was sacrificing the missing kids, but I didn't see much else coming; I was totally surprised throughout the story. I highly recommend this, but know that it does contain some rather mature scenes that many teenagers are not ready for. If you are a parent and your child expresses interest, I would recommend reading it for yourself first and gauging if your child is ready for the themes they will encounter in this book.
